Distal Radial Ulnar Joint (DRUJ) Instability

Distal Radial Ulnar Joint (DRUJ) provides not only supination and pronation of the forearm, but also is crucial to the grip strength and lifting capabilities of individuals.

Two forces act in the forearm:

– axial loading, which is created by the muscles to produce gripping,

– transverse force,, which runs from the hand to the radius to the ulnar head and is the force of gravity against which the arm has to lift.

During forearm motion, the distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ) moves synchronously with the proximal radioulnar joint. Due to that fact, any injury or deformity involving the radius or ulna can alter the function of both joints.

Long-term using the DRUJ, including lifting heavy objects and stressed rotating forearm may result in distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ) instability. Furthermore, systematic stress of the joint, may lead to ulnar styloid and distal ulnar fractures.

Most stress and dislocations of distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ) are caused in daily activities such as physical work or gymnastic exercises.

Symptoms of DRUJ instability and stress of ulnar styloid are pain and limited motion with lifting the objects disability.

Usually treatment bases on non-invasive procedures, including stabilization and pharmacology. In more serious cases, surgery is crucial.

What is more, our ulnar abutment brace AM-OSN-U-17 is equipped with removable pad providing support for ulnar styloid which is made of UniPren™. Due to this fact, the brace not only stabilizes distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ), but also supports head and ulnar styloid, preventing stress fractures.

AeroSpace II™ is an innovative new generation raw material. It is a distance elastic 3D knitted fabric consisting of two layers of facings and an interlacing that creates the appropriate thickness of the raw material and has relieving properties. The knitwear is made of the highest quality polyester yarn - guaranteeing high mechanical strength and spandex ensuring its proper flexibility. AeroSpace II™ has an external self-gripping layer what makes it easy to adjust each product to individual patient’s needs. This material is characterized by a very low weight, high flexibility and a very large openwork structure, allowing for very easy drainage of sweat from the body and bringing fresh air to the skin. Products made of this raw material are neutral to the secured joint, do not heat or cool it, but ensure its proper compression and fit and reduce muscle vibrations generated during physical exertion. Its thickness and 3D structure perfectly relieves the orthopedic splints, stays or other elements mounted on the product and guarantees velvety softness to the touch.

UniPren™

UniPren™ is a universal 3-layer material consisting of an external elastic polyamide cover knit with a self-adhesive function, an internal neoprene foam core and an elastic jersey cover knit. This material is characterized by softness and very high flexibility. A very important advantage of this material is the fact that it is not a knitted product, it does not have thick fibers, so that the weaves of the material do not imprint on the patient's skin and do not cause abrasionsin places of high compression. Products made of UniPren™ are the strongest and most effective stabilizing orthoses available on the market. Self-adhesive function, the raw material makes it much easier to use.

2D supports

2D supports are, apart from 3D supports, the second type of supports used in the production of orthoses. They are made of various types of relieving foams and have very different shapes. The special feature of these pelottes is that, unlike the 3D pelottes, they are not independent parts of the orthosis, but only their parts, that must be sewn between the materials from which the orthosis is made to work properly. These pads have an anatomical shape and are made of comfortable foam with proper hardness and elasticity, which guarantees the proper therapeutic effect.
